A preliminary investigation of age and growth of Otolithes ruber from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa OceanDocs
Fennessy, S.T.; Brash, J.M..
This study investigated age and growth of Otolithes ruber, found in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The specimens were collected from prawn trawlers that operate off the shallow water Tugela Bank and from a recreational boat fishery in Durban. Estimates of age and growth parameters were based on the examination of sectioned sagittal otoliths. There was difficulty in estimating growth parameters for separate sexes because the small fish were not sexed and the numbers of males was low. Periodicity of growth zone formation was assumed to be annual although periodicity of growth zone deposition could not be established by marginal zone analysis. The von Bertalanffy growth curve was used to describe the combined male and female growth of O. ruber: Lt = 419mm TL...

A study of the abilities in oral language comprehension of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination - Portuguese version: a reference guide for the Brazilian population BJMBR
Mansur,L.L.; Radanovic,M.; Taquemori,L.; Greco,L.; Araújo,G.C..
We analyzed the performance of 162 normal subjects, subdivided into groups according to age and schooling, in the oral comprehension tasks of the Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination translated and adapted to Brazilian Portuguese to obtain a profile of performance for the Brazilian population, as well as cut-off scores for each task, and to determine the best combination of tasks that distinguish normal from aphasic subjects, as a guide for clinicians. The normal subjects were compared to 69 aphasics. Age alone influenced the performance in the designation of actions (subjects above 70 years showing the worst performance); schooling alone influenced the comprehension of forms, colors and numbers (subjects with less than four years of education showing a...

Age and growth of blackfin tuna (Thunnus atianticus) caught under moored fish aggregating devices, around Martinique Island ArchiMer
Doray, Mathieu; Stequert, Bernard; Taquet, Marc.
Daily growth increments measured in the otolith of Thunnus atlanticus were used to estimate the age and growth of individuals. which were sampled from an artisanal fishery operating around fish aggregating devices (FADs) moored off Martinique Island. In this study, 76 otoliths were analysed for fish ranging from 20 to 68 cm fork lengths (FL). The fish were caught using trolling lines at depths ranging from 0 to 10 m. Counts were made, under a light microscope, on the external part of the transverse section of the sagittae, from the primordium to the ventral edge. The mean coefficient of variation of the age reading was 2.4%. To validate readings, the number of increments for 11 individuals was counted using both optic and scanning electron microscopes. The...

Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix), (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) in the Itaipu Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil Zoologia
Ambrósio,Ângela Maria; Gomes,Luiz Carlos; Agostinho,Ângelo Antônio.
Age and growth of Hypophthalmus edentatus (Spix, 1829) (Siluriformes, Hypophthalmidae) was determined. Data were collected from December 1983 to November 1984 and from April 1997 to March 1998 in the Itaipu Reservoir. To evaluate reading consistency, it was analyzed the coefficient of variation of the total length for each annulus observed in the otoliths. Through marginal increment analysis, it was determined that the annuli formed annually (April) indicating that otoliths may be used in the study of age and growth of the species. Food supply was considered the main factor affecting growth and annuli formation in both periods. Back-calculated data were used to assess if the Rosa Lee phenomenon, commom in selective samples like commercial fishing, occured....

Age and growth of the striped seabream, Lithognathus mormyrus (Actinopterygii: Perciformes: Sparidae), in the central coast of Algeria, Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Boufersaoui, Samira; Kassar, Abderrahmane; Mokrane, Zakia; Elleboode, Romain; Mahe, Kelig.
Background. Striped seabream, Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758), is a bony fish, which has a high economic value on the Algerian coast. Because of the increasing fishing pressure, however, a close monitoring is recommended. The information about the biology of this species, occurring in the south-western Mediterranean Sea and especially in the north African coast, is very limited. The presently reported study provides new estimated data on age and growth parameters of striped seabream in Algeria. Materials and methods. A total of 449 specimens of L. mormyrus were sampled for 2 years (January 2013 to December 2014) from the commercial fishery in the central part of the Algerian coast. The samples were collected monthly. The fish ranged in size from...

Age, condition and dominance-related sexual ornament size before and during the breeding season in the black grouse Lyrurus tetrix ArchiMer
Harris, Sarah; Kervinen, Matti; Lebigre, Christophe; Pike, Thomas W.; Soulsbury, Carl D..
Male ornaments function as honest cues of male quality in many species and are subject to intra‐ and intersexual selection. These ornaments are generally studied during peak expression, however their size outside the breeding season may determine ultimate ornament size and costliness, and as such reproductive success. We investigated whether male black grouse Lyrurus tetrix eye comb size was related to age, condition and measures of male dominance before and during the breeding season. Total combined eye comb size began to increase ~70 days before the start of the breeding season. Adult males (aged ≥ 2 years old) had consistently larger eye combs than younger males (1 year old) both before and during the breeding season. Heavier and more dominant adult...

AGE DIFFERENCES AND MACROECONOMIC EFFECTS ON FOOD STAMP PROGRAM PARTICIPATION AgEcon
Lim, So Yeong; Chen, Susan E.; Waldorf, Brigitte S..
Low income populations are more severely affected by economic downturns than their high income counterparts because they are at high risk of unemployment and face reduced earnings in recessions. The use of food stamp benefits and other types of welfare are one mechanism that families can use to buffer the economic shock brought about by income losses due to unemployment during a recession. As a result, during unfavorable economic conditions, low income households disproportionately rely on public assistance including food stamps. What is less understood are the differential effects of macroeconomic conditions on the participation propensities of different population subgroups. Of particular importance are differential effects by age. Depending on their...

AGE DIFFERENCES AND MACROECONOMIC EFFECTS ON FOOD STAMP PROGRAM PARTICIPATION AgEcon
Lim, So Yeong; Chen, Susan E.; Waldorf, Brigitte S..
This study examines Food Stamp Program (FSP) participation patterns with an emphasis on macroeconomic effects and age differences. Entry into and exit out of the program are examined with data from the Survey of Income and Program Participation 2004 panel using probit techniques. The results indicate that young adults easily enter the FSP but quickly move out. Older people are hesitant to enter the FSP but they stay on longer compared to their younger counterparts. The estimation results confirm the common belief that economic dynamics and FSP participation are negatively related. When the unemployment rates rise, the likelihood of entry and continuation on food stamps increases. This study also documents that the macroeconomic effects on FSP transitions...

Age Effect in the Morphological Traits Performance for Sex Determination in Human Skulls and Mandibles International Journal of Morphology
Suazo Galdames,Iván; Zavando,Daniela.
In this study we tested the hypothesis that diagnostic performance of the morphological indicators for sexual dimorphism are reduced as they are applied in skull and mandibles of older subjects. We used 275 adult human skulls, 250 of these with mandible, all subjects with sex and age registry. Sixteen classic morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were evaluated, this information was compared with the registry and results noted in terms of precision. The best general performance of morphological indicators of sexual dimorphism were recorded in the 31 - 40 and 61 - 70 years, age range groups. Lowest precision ws recorded in the group corresponding to subjects between 21 30 years. Our results do not support the proposed hypothesis and suggest a...

Age effects on the pharmacokinetics of tityustoxin from Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom in rats BJMBR
Nunan,E.A.; Arya,V.; Hochhaus,G.; Cardoso,V.N.; Moraes-Santos,T..
The pharmacokinetics of scorpion venom and its toxins has been investigated in experimental models using adult animals, although, severe scorpion accidents are associated more frequently with children. We compared the effect of age on the pharmacokinetics of tityustoxin, one of the most active principles of Tityus serrulatus venom, in young male/female rats (21-22 days old, N = 5-8) and in adult male rats (150-160 days old, N = 5-8). Tityustoxin (6 µg) labeled with 99mTechnetium was administered subcutaneously to young and adult rats. The plasma concentration vs time data were subjected to non-compartmental pharmacokinetic analysis to obtain estimates of various pharmacokinetic parameters such as total body clearance (CL/F), distribution volume (Vd/F),...

Age et croissance de <Pagrus caeruleostictus> (Valenciennes,1830) des côtes de Nouakchott OceanDocs
Dia, M.; Ghorbel, M.; Kone, Y.; Bouaîn, A..

Ould Yarba, L.; Ghorbel, M.; Bouain, A..
The red Pandora Pagellus bellottii is one of the most important demersal species in the fisheries of Mauritanian coasts. Several gears and fleet traditionally exploit it. The studies concerning this fish and particularly those of its age and growth are rare and haven't used the adequate method, which uses hard pieces like scale and vertebra. The objective of the present work is to contribute to the knowledge of the growth parameters of the red Pandora using the scales method not yet used in the studied area. To determine the age and to study the growth of Pagellus bellottii in Mauritanian coasts, we have used the scales of 544 individuals. We have taken, 8 scales under the fin pectoral and we have read the age using a binocular magnifying glass provided...

Age et croîssance du chinchard à quelque jaune (trachurus méditerraneus) dans la région nord de la Tunisie OceanDocs
Fezzani Serbaji, S.; Chemmam-A, B.; Ben Salem, M..

Age, growth and mortality of the starry weever Trachinus radiatus Cuvier, 1829 in the Tunisian waters ArchiMer
Hamed, Oussama; Dufour, Jean-louis; Chakroun-marzouk, Nadia; Mahe, Kelig.
Age, growth and mortality of the Starry weever Trachinus radiatus were studied for the first time from 214 individuals collected in the Gulf of Tunis between February 2014 and January 2016. The significant relationship between length-weight was observed for males (a = 0.011, b = 2.992, R2 = 0.981, n = 77) and females (a = 0.010, b = 3.036, R² =0.957, n = 109). Age was estimated by the observation of otoliths transverse thin sections. Age of individuals ranged from 1 to 15 years. The precision was measured by two age estimations from two experts and indicated a good agreement between them (PA = 85.6%, CV = 3.8% and IAPE = 4.1%). The growth parameters of the von Bertalanffy model were TL∞ = 38.41 cm, W∞ = 507.47 g, K = 0.3396 year-1, t0 = 0 year for males...

Age, growth and mortality of the striped seabream Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Tunis (Central Mediterranean Sea) ArchiMer
Khaldi, Asma; Chater, Ines; Elleboode, Romain; Mahé, Kelig; Chakroun-marzouk, Nadia.
Despite the high commercial value of the striped seabream Lithognathus mormyrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Gulf of Tunis, biological data on its age, growth and exploitation rate are lacking. With the aim of estimating growth parameters, 516 individuals, ranging from 6–27.5 cm total length and from 3.5–293.5 g total weight, were collected from the artisanal fishing fleet between February 2014 and July 2016. The somatic growth presented a positive allometry and was described by the equation TW = 6.54 10−3TL3.213. The monthly analysis of the marginal increment of the otoliths revealed that only one annulus was deposited per year. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters were: L∞ = 30.18 cm, k = 0.303 year−1 and t0 = −1.42 years. Total and natural...

Age, Health, and the Willingness to Pay for Mortality Risk Reductions: A Contingent Valuation Survey in Japan AgEcon
Itaoka, Kenshi; Krupnick, Alan J.; Akai, Makoto; Alberini, Anna; Cropper, Maureen L.; Simon, Nathalie B..
A contingent valuation survey was conducted in Sizuoka, Japan, to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for reductions in the risk of dying and calculate the value of statistical life (VSL) for use in environmental policy in Japan. Special attention was devoted to the effects of age and health characteristics on WTP. We find that the VSLs are somewhat lower (103 to 344 million yen) than those found in the virtually identical survey applied in some developed countries. These values were subject to a variety of validity tests, which they generally passed. We find that the WTP for those over age 70 is lower than that for younger adults, but that this effect is eliminated in multiple regression. Rather, when accounting for other covariates, we find that WTP...

Age, Health, and the Willingness to Pay for Mortality Risk Reductions: A Contingent Valuation Survey of Ontario Residents AgEcon
Krupnick, Alan J.; Alberini, Anna; Cropper, Maureen L.; Simon, Nathalie B.; O'Brien, Bernie; Goeree, Ron; Heintzelman, Martin.
Much of the justification for environmental rulemaking rests on estimates of the benefits to society of reduced mortality rates. This research aims to fill gaps in the literature that estimates the value of a statistical life (VSL) by designing and implementing a contingent valuation study for persons 40 to 75 years of age, and eliciting WTP for reductions in current and future risks of death. Targeting this age range also allows us to examine the impact of age on WTP and, by asking respondents to complete a detailed health questionnaire, to examine the impact of health status on WTP. This survey was self-administered by computer to 930 persons in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1999. The survey uses audio and visual aids to communicate baseline risks of death and...
